Protein is hugely important when building and developing lean muscle. For bodybuilders it is one of the most important nutrients they consume. Whilst carbohydrate gives the energy, it is the protein that actually aids your muscles in repairing and recovering. This is when they grow and strengthen.

When this happens your muscles get stronger and bigger. By eating foods high in protein, you can get the nutrient to your muscles faster. These foods would be whey, lean meats, fish, chicken, eggs and soya. You can buy protein shakes that are loaded with high protein if you haven’t time to cook.

Why Protein Is Beneficial

When you train hard, your body requires more protein. If you don’t get enough protein you will actually begin to lose muscle mass and definition. It can also lead to your immune system becoming weaker and it takes longer to recover. So having a high protein diet is very important in building up muscle mass and giving you the energy to train hard.

If you workout and aren’t eating enough protein, your body will start breaking down your own muscle and converting it into energy. If you want to build large muscle then this is obviously the thing you want to avoid the most. Many bodybuilders use whey protein supplements and you can buy them from any good health store. They are usually in powder form and you mix it into a drink or shake. It is important to have protein immediately after you workout as that is when your body needs them most.

You can increase your protein intake by eating more lean meats, protein bars, protein shakes, fish, chicken, eggs and dairy products. I just wish there were more protein in bananas because I like my bananas!
